Temecula

History

In the early 900 A.D. the City of Temecula became the home to the first Temecula Indians, the Luiseņo Indians, who built their homes on the beautiful hillsides. Throughout the years many came and visited and established their own life style and culture. But in the mid-1840's Mexico could no longer hold on to California so governors began processing grants to individuals. In 1845 Temecula was granted to Felix Valdez and the romantic era of the rancheros and vaqueros began. By the late 1860's with the population growing the first town store and inland Southern California post office was established and the first of the Butterfield Overland stagecoach line ended up in the Temecula Valley, which was to run between St. Louis and San Francisco. Temecula Valley grew and grew and by the 1980's the I-15 corridor between Los Angeles and San Diego was completed. On December 1989 the citizens on the valley officially voted to name their city "Temecula."
